Moving data for Digital Lumens

Bringing light through design and animation

Digital Lumens is a cutting edge facility wellness company that delivers sustainable energy efficiency and lighting solutions via metering, monitoring, and management. They asked Hiker to create an explainer video for SiteWorx, Digital Lumens’ flagship suite of user applications.

Our challenge was to make something concrete and human out of some of the most basic graphical abstractions. As our lead designer Nika puts it, “We were told Digital Lumens really loved lines and dots!” That love was reflected in the company’s logo itself, a pixelated “DL”. There were few other visual assets supplied. Hiker wrote a voiceover script, which accounted for nearly everything our designers had to work from.

To drive home the video’s message, our design team rendered fragments of our scripted voiceover as bits of graphical language on the screen. The effect was to pinpoint key messages while also reducing the length of some of the voiceover’s sentences and making its sometimes technical language more tangible and “speedier” to the ear. We also put Digital Lumens’ dot-based logo in motion, which no creative partner had ever done before—we made the client dance on the screen.

The overall result was a video that imparted continuous liveliness and inventiveness using the barest of visual tools—just lines and dots and a few colors. The Digital Lumens engagement proved you don’t need very much to tell a good story. Just a few dots, lines, colors, and a lot of imagination.
